Our Story
It all began with a visit to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
People often ask us how we found Sharon Springs, New York and started coming here. It all started because I always had a desire to see the National Baseball Hall of Fame. I am not a huge baseball fan but I love history, Americana, museums and road trips. I was studying at Seton Hall in their graduate program for Museum Professions and was interested in museums of all types and how they designed their displays.
One day I found myself watching the Food Network's popular television show starring Rachael Ray, "40 Dollars a Day" Season 1, Episode 17 featuring Cooperstown, NY. Rachel stopped at The American Hotel in Sharon Springs for breakfast, a short drive from Cooperstown. The hotel and town looked equally as quaint as Cooperstown, so I called for a reservation over Labor Day weekend 2007. See Rachel Ray's visit to Sharon Springs!
Robert and I drove up from our home in New Jersey, stayed in Room 1 (our favorite) and immediately fell in love with the hotel, the village and the people. We sat on the front porch of the hotel and never felt so relaxed. We decided we would return. Not only did we return, we've returned many times alone and with friends and family, each time meeting even more fun and interesting people.
Driving around the area there are beautiful views and peaceful farm scenes. We curiously inquired about how much property cost and after much searching, bought a 5 acre plot in the Village of Sharon Springs on Kilts Road in April 2008 with the plans of someday building on it. Fast forward several years and we decided the time was right. Robert wanted to be within walking distance of the town and instead we found this home was for sale. We bought the house that would become WHOM in August 2013 and immediately began renovations to make it more updated and comfortable as it was originally built pre-Civil War. Our property on Kilts Road is still waiting for our next Sharon Springs project.
Why not plan a visit soon. There are many things to do, or nothing at all. There is antique shopping, great restaurants and beautiful views and hopefully the several Sharon Springs festivals during the year will be able to return soon. If you are fans of Beekman 1802 from their past TV shows and recent HSN/QVC appearances, their beautiful and unique Beekman Mercantile is just steps from our porch for you to visit. We are sure you will enjoy it here as much as we do!
